Internal Family Systems

Understanding Internal Family Systems (IFS)

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a powerful and transformative approach to therapy that helps individuals understand and heal the different “parts” of themselves. Developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz, IFS is based on the idea that the mind is made up of multiple subpersonalities, or parts, each with its own role and function. These parts often develop as a way to protect us, especially in response to past trauma or difficult experiences. The goal of IFS is to help individuals connect with their core Self, a place of calm, compassion, and confidence that can bring harmony to the entire internal system.

    How IFS Works

In IFS therapy, we recognize three primary types of parts:

    • Protectors (Managers and Firefighters): These parts work to prevent pain by controlling situations, avoiding discomfort, or distracting through behaviors such as perfectionism, anger, or addictive tendencies.
    • Exiles: These are the wounded parts that carry deep pain, shame, fear, or trauma. Protectors work to keep these exiled parts buried to avoid distress.
    • Self: The true, unburdened core of who you are. When you are in Self-energy, you experience qualities such as curiosity, compassion, clarity, and confidence. Healing happens when Self is able to connect with and lead the parts.

Through IFS, clients learn to listen to, understand, and heal their parts, rather than suppress or fight against them. By fostering a compassionate relationship between Self and parts, deep healing and transformation become possible.

Who Can Benefit from IFS Therapy?

IFS is an effective approach for individuals struggling with:

    • Trauma and PTSD
    • Anxiety and depression
    • Addiction and compulsive behaviors
    • Relationship challenges
    • Low self-esteem and inner criticism
    • Emotional dysregulation
    • Identity and self-discovery

By working with IFS, individuals gain greater emotional resilience, improved self-acceptance, and a deeper sense of inner peace.

What to Expect in an IFS Therapy Session

At Campbell Recovery Services, our therapists guide clients through the IFS process in a safe and supportive environment. Sessions may include:

    1. Identifying the Parts – We help clients recognize the different voices, emotions, and behaviors within their system.
    2. Building a Relationship with Parts – Through curiosity and compassion, clients learn to understand the role and needs of each part.
    3. Unburdening Exiled Parts – Once protectors feel safe enough to allow access, we work with exiled parts to release past pain and trauma.
    4. Restoring Internal Balance – By strengthening the connection between Self and parts, clients develop greater emotional harmony and self-leadership.

IFS therapy is a non-pathologizing approach, meaning that all parts are welcomed and understood with compassion. Rather than seeing any part of yourself as “bad” or “broken,” IFS helps you uncover the wisdom and protective intentions behind each part, leading to a profound sense of self-acceptance and healing.
