Compassionate, Specialized Care for Eating Disorders
At Campbell Recovery Services, we understand that eating disorders are complex mental health conditions—not simply issues with food or body image. They often involve emotional distress, perfectionism, anxiety, trauma, obsessive thoughts, low self-worth, and unhealthy coping patterns that extend far beyond eating behaviors.
Recovery is possible, and you don’t have to navigate it alone.
Our multidisciplinary approach combines specialized therapy, eating disorder recovery coaching, family support, accountability, and collaboration with medical and nutrition professionals when appropriate. We believe lasting recovery happens by addressing both the emotional and behavioral aspects of an eating disorder while helping clients build a healthier relationship with food, movement, their body, and themselves.
What Is an Eating Disorder?
Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental health conditions characterized by persistent disturbances in eating behaviors and unhealthy thoughts surrounding food, weight, body image, or exercise. They affect people of every age, gender, race, body size, and background.
Eating disorders are not a choice, a lack of willpower, or simply a desire to lose weight. They are complex illnesses influenced by biological, psychological, social, and environmental factors.
Without treatment, eating disorders can have serious emotional, psychological, and medical consequences. However, with specialized treatment and support, recovery is possible.
Common Signs of an Eating Disorder
Although every person’s experience is unique, common warning signs may include:
Changes in Eating Behaviors
Body Image Concerns
Compensatory Behaviors
Emotional & Behavioral Signs
If you recognize these signs in yourself or someone you love, seeking help early can greatly improve recovery outcomes.
Types of Eating Disorders & Related Conditions
Anorexia Nervosa
Anorexia Nervosa is characterized by significant food restriction, an intense fear of gaining weight, and a distorted body image. Individuals often place extreme importance on body weight or shape despite experiencing significant physical and emotional consequences.
Bulimia Nervosa
Bulimia Nervosa involves recurring episodes of binge eating followed by compensatory behaviors such as self-induced vomiting, fasting, excessive exercise, or misuse of laxatives or other medications in an attempt to prevent weight gain.
Binge Eating Disorder (BED)
Binge Eating Disorder involves recurrent episodes of consuming unusually large amounts of food while experiencing a loss of control. Unlike Bulimia Nervosa, binge eating episodes are not regularly followed by purging behaviors. Binge Eating Disorder is the most common eating disorder and is often associated with shame, guilt, and emotional distress.
Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID)
ARFID involves significant restriction of food intake that is not driven by concerns about weight or body image. Individuals may avoid foods because of sensory sensitivities, fear of choking or vomiting, or a lack of interest in eating. Despite the absence of body image concerns, ARFID can result in serious nutritional and medical complications.
Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD)
Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is a mental health condition characterized by an intense preoccupation with perceived flaws or defects in one’s appearance that are often minor or not noticeable to others. Individuals with BDD may spend excessive amounts of time checking mirrors, seeking reassurance, comparing themselves to others, or avoiding social situations because of concerns about their appearance.
Although Body Dysmorphic Disorder is not classified as an eating disorder, it frequently co-occurs with eating disorders and body image concerns. Both conditions can significantly impact self-esteem, relationships, daily functioning, and overall quality of life. Treatment often focuses on improving body image, reducing obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors, while helping clients develop a healthier relationship with themselves.
Our Approach to Eating Disorder Treatment
At Campbell Recovery Services, we recognize that eating disorders impact every area of life—not just eating habits. Effective treatment addresses the emotional, psychological, relational, and behavioral patterns that contribute to the disorder while helping clients develop practical skills to support lasting recovery.
Our therapists work collaboratively with clients to understand the underlying factors driving disordered eating, improve emotional regulation, strengthen self-esteem, challenge unhealthy beliefs, and develop healthier coping strategies. Treatment is individualized because every person’s experience with an eating disorder is unique.
Depending on each client’s needs, treatment may include:
Every treatment plan is tailored to the client’s goals, medical stability, stage of recovery, and support system.
Levels of Care & Care Coordination
Eating disorders exist on a spectrum, and treatment needs vary from person to person. Some individuals benefit from weekly outpatient therapy and recovery coaching, while others require a higher level of care, such as an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), Residential Treatment, or inpatient medical stabilization.
At Campbell Recovery Services, we provide comprehensive outpatient therapy and eating disorder recovery coaching while working closely with physicians, psychiatrists, registered dietitians, primary care providers, and other healthcare professionals. Collaboration allows every member of the treatment team to work toward the same recovery goals while ensuring clients receive the level of care that best meets their needs.
If a higher level of care becomes appropriate, we conduct comprehensive assessments, provide referrals to trusted eating disorder treatment programs, and remain involved throughout the transition whenever possible. When clients step down from residential or intensive treatment, we also provide outpatient therapy and recovery coaching to help maintain progress, strengthen recovery skills, and reduce the risk of relapse.

One of the unique aspects of Campbell Recovery Services is our ability to combine specialized therapy with eating disorder recovery coaching.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can eating disorders be treated on an outpatient basis?
Yes. Many individuals benefit from outpatient therapy and eating disorder recovery coaching. Others may require a higher level of care depending on medical stability, nutritional needs, and the severity of symptoms. We help determine the most appropriate level of care through comprehensive assessment and ongoing collaboration.
Do you work with adolescents and adults?
Yes. We provide specialized eating disorder therapy and recovery coaching for adolescents, young adults, and adults.
Do you work with families?
Absolutely. Family involvement is often an important part of recovery. We provide education, family therapy, coaching, and guidance to help loved ones effectively support the recovery process.
What if I also struggle with anxiety, trauma, OCD, or substance use?
Eating disorders frequently occur alongside other mental health conditions. Our therapists are experienced in treating co-occurring disorders, allowing us to address the whole person rather than focusing solely on eating behaviors.
